Winterton in Bloom

Winterton On Sea had not participated in the In Bloom Competitions for many years until 2002 when Winterton had the pleasure of receiving 2nd in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston In Bloom, 2nd in Norfolk Village of the Year Competition and Silver Award in the Anglia In Bloom Competition, with the Winterton First School receiving a certificate of merit for their wild garden.

This was a magnificent achievement brought about by the Village residents holding a public meeting, which culminated in the support of the Winterton Parish Council, and some 26 village residents.

The Village held an 'Open Gardens Day' when numerous residents opened their gardens to the public for a small fee.

Financially the group commenced with a donation from the Parish Council and small donations from various clubs with a coffee morning raising required moneys, otherwise the members themselves provided individually. Required items were 'begged, stolen, or borrowed from local businesses and residents. The boat that was placed on the Village Green was donated by a Winterton resident, as was the flints, barrels, planters made by a local farmer and plants, soil etc. provided by resident. The children of Winterton First School donated plants, which they placed in the Village Green and, to their pleasure, a photograph of the same was placed in the Great Yarmouth Mercury.

The Winterton In Bloom Team have continued over the years to progress and we now have some 75 residents participating who are continually Winners in the Yarmouth In Bloom, Anglia In Bloom and proudly the Britain In Bloom Competitions. Winterton On Sea were past Winners in the Norfolk Village of the Year Competition and Village Green of the Year. Winterton On Sea received Silver Gilt at the 2006 Yarmouth In Bloom Award Ceremony but took a well-earned rest this year from other Competitions. We hold the Open Gardens in the summer each year with the Church Open and added a Scarecrow Competition this year, which was a great success.

Past Judges commented:

"Winterton On Sea epitomises everything that the In Bloom Campaign is trying to achieve; the sense of community, enthusiasm and appropriateness of everything they are doing is an example to all."

One of the projects taken on by the In Bloom Team is Duffles Pond, an overgrown area situated behind the Church and now transformed into a Wildlife Area open for all to visit and relax. Also the object is to make it available to the School and other youth groups where they can observe the wildlife in its natural state and enhance their education.

Finance for the In Bloom efforts within Winterton over the years was made available with donations of finance or 'in kind' from several individuals and business including the Residents of Winterton, The Parish Council, The Borough Council, The Fisherman's Return Public House, Bycroft Estate Agents, Sign Connections, Myhills Plant Centre, Broadland Nurseries, Winterton Beach Cafe & Car Park, The Great Yarmouth Mercury and with all the local businesses including Winterton Fish Bar, Post Office and Loomes Store.

The In Bloom team consists of a happy band of volunteers of all ages and we urgently require new members to join and help enhance the beauty of Winterton. Ring Bob Atyeo 0n 01493 394902 who will be pleased to welcome you to the group
