Winterton Primary School
From the mid nineteenth century there has been schooling in Winterton. A school was built on the present site in the 1850s thanks to funding from Joseph Hume, M.P. for Montrose, who lived at Burnley Hall, East Somerton. Parts of that original building remain but there have been many changes over the years though none as extensive as the work undertaken over this last year.
A £1 million building programme has updated the older parts and provided the school with a new classroom, library and superb hall. There is also a specialist Nursery room catering for the youngest children which was added a few years ago.
In September 2007 Winterton First School and Nursery became Winterton Primary School. This means that the school will be able to take pupils from 3-11 years of age. There are currently 4 teaching staff and 60 pupils. This number will grow year on year.
The village of Winterton is proud of its school. Here are a few comments from the 2006 Ofsted inspection report:
Children of all abilities achieve well. At the end of year 3 standards in Reading, Writing and Mathematics are above average. The provision for their personal development and their well being is outstanding.
The Headteacher leads the school with infectious enthusiasm that inspires staff and children to do their best and ensures that everyone feels cared for and valued.
Links with the community are fostered, although during this last year many activities had to be scaled down while the builders were on site. However 2007/2008 has started with renewed enthusiasm with a Health and Beauty evening and a Harvest Festival Service. Both events supported well by parents and villagers.
The 'Friends of Winterton School' group is very active in raising money for the benefit of the children. Any villager can join.
